What do Notaries charge? Feedback from blog commentary

Notary pricing is across the board and the people responding to my blog articles might be on the more experienced or successful side. I’m not sure about that claim though as I have no way to verify. Here are some results to my question about — what do you charge?

What do you charge for Notary work & signings?

Summary
Of the responders who are not looking like they represent the community as a whole, but might represent a higher percentage of very seasoned Notaries, the mean price seems to be about 100-110 per refinance, but the average for them might be more like 125.

Most Notaries are complaining about being low-balled, and having to take low offers. Perhaps they are too busy working for peanuts to respond to my blog.

It is quite possible that the average Notaries get paid these days for refinances is 70 or 80 because most jobs come from Snapdocs. However, in our defense, the higher paying jobs normally come from 123notary although people low-ball using our site as well.

Do you prefer texts, calls, or emails?

I asked Notaries on our blog which they liked. One Notary said that on Snapdocs, the first to answer the text gets the job regardless of the quality of the notary. One Notary gets mostly emails and liked that. Some are old fashioned and prefer calls.

The way 123notary is set up is that people get mostly calls and some emails, but no texts. I guess we have a niche in the market and it is an old school niche for better or worse.

The bottom line is that if you are slow by email, someone else will get the job. You have to be fast in your response rate to whatever medium you use. Personally I have no idea what I would like if I were still a Notary so I will refrain from commenting. Phone calls are annoying if you are doing other things. But, texts offer you the opportunity to silently respond unless you are driving. Using the phone while driving without a hands free might be illegal but you can do it and probably not get caught. Texting on the road is deadly and should not be done no matter what unless you pull over.

I find 123Notary is indeed well regarded. It was one of the top two groups recommended to me by a mortgage broker operating with multiple lenders US wide while he was in California, Nevada, Oregon and Ohio.

I won’t sign up with that company as too many notaries got cheated out of their just fees. They don’t care or give a damn!

How do I sleep at night saying they are not as good?

A Notary posts — how do I sleep at night saying that the Notaries on some other site are not as good as the Notaries on my site. And then he states that I am not even a Notary.

Rebuttal:

I am not even a Notary
I used to be a Notary for eight years. I test Notaries on Notary procedure and they normally score an average of 35%. Is 35% good enough to practice Notary work? I score close to 100% on Notary questions and got very few wrong on the very hard California exam many years ago. Of course the content has change in California, but that is immaterial. I am not perfect, but I know Notary procedure better than most Notaries on my site — the exceptions are those that work for the NNA hotline or for state notary divisions as they normally know more than I do — although I caught a lady working for the California SOS make a logical mistake understanding credible witness procedure. The law is complicated and perhaps too convoluted.

How do I sleep at night saying that the Notaries on other sites are not as good?
I sleep fine, but sleep better if I take Advil and kefir (cultured milk). What can I say, the milk calms me down, and no, it doesn’t need to be warm milk like people in India insist. Since I tested almost all the Notaries on 123notary, and also test Notaries I find from particular other sources like Snapdocs, etc., I am aware of the quality of these notaries in terms of test results. Notaries on SnapDocs very rarely score higher than a D on my test. And the notaries that are the top ranking people in their state on SnapDocs do not normally do better than a C. Higher ranking Notaries on 123notary are not always good, but at least we have a good quantity of people who are masters of their craft and also have a depth of experience.

So, I am comparing apples to apples with fair scales. I have a right to assess the quality of Notaries because I represent them. I feel responsible to offer the world good Notaries if I can. I can only do my best. Who are you in your ignorance of this profession to criticize me — I have been running a directory for 20 years and have been a Notary for 8 and done very well on multiple tests not to mention created hundreds of test variations and stimulating quiz questions myself.

I laughed so hard at some of these stories that my side hurts. I’ve been in this “never know what to expect” business since 2009
and I love it because I have never seen two closings that are alike. It’s always an exciting challenge. Sad or funny we all have good memories and I truly appreciate the people I met along the way that allowed me to be a part of their life.

The following is not meant to be a political statement. As Susan Collins said recently….. “we have forgotten the common values that bind us together as Americans”. That appears to be your problem when you state that “Being nice in my job description comes last in a long list of other requirements.”
Being nice, whether you are the hiring party or not, is a basic human value that we all need to remember. I am not trying to be antagonistic or whiny. New Notary app helps you find an eNotary in Virginia or participating state

Yes folks, usually articles like this are written in jest, but I had to get this new information off my chest about a new Notary company that is the best in the West (actually East, but that didn’t rhyme). I just found out that there is an actual company in Boston called “Notarize” (“A” for being an industry specific name and “F” for uniqueness) that can help you find a Notary in Texas, Virginia, or Nevada, that specialize in remote eNotarizations.

This startup’s new COO is Elizabeth Graham, and she has worked for Wayfair and HubSpot as an executive (and is probably not to be messed with, but I speculate, and I digress.)

Notarize is signing up large institutions one by one, and trying to get them change the way they think so as to indoctrinate them into hopefully enjoying the convenience of their new online offering.

Notarize, founded in 2015, is a platform just like SnapDocs, but specializes only in the online aspect of the profession. They have 100 employees and look like they are making it big already and growing rapidly. So, you will be hearing more about them as time goes on for better or for worse. All I can say is let’s pray to God they don’t low-ball.

I’m a high end Notary in a low ball world

Are you a highbrow Notary in a low-brow world, or a high-end Notary in a low-ball world? join the club. There are lots of Notaries out there with tons of experience who have a lot of trouble getting paid well or getting work at all. On the other hand, there is what I call the double bell curve effect in the Notary world. There are lots of new Notaries, lots of mega-experience Notaries, but not so many people in the middle.

The problem as I see it is that there are many Notaries who perceive themselves as being high-end simply because they have experience. They hide behind their years of experience to compensate for the fact that they cannot explain a single Notary act and don’t have a clue how to deal with many common Notary situations. Another problem is that in today’s economy there are too many Notaries and too few jobs. With Snapdocs, if you are not fast to respond to texts you will be put lower on the text order algorithm and might stop getting offers altogether. So, how can you win during these desperate times? The answer is that there are no guarantees. However, being high end in virtue instead of high end in claim will help you a whole lot more. What do I mean?

I recently emailed about 150 notaries regarding their certification. I wanted them to study and quiz again at no cost. Half of them emailed me back and the other half did not. The ones that emailed me back did not read the email carefully. They omitted to read the part that said they had to study a lot. So, I responded to people one by one reminding them (the same way you remind children) that you have to study. I only got four requests from people who had studied sufficiently, and most of those four passed. What about the other 150? Why are people so stubborn, lazy, ignorant and uncooperative? If you can’t pass our certification test (which is really hard these days) then you are NOT a high end Notary. You are only a poser and a chump.

Additionally, getting more reviews on your profile will attract browsers, and so will having a well written notes section. To sum it up, a lot of expertise goes into being a Notary, but less than 1% of the people on our site have that knowledge or have any interest in acquiring that knowledge. This whole industry has turned low-end on me and I’m getting really sick of it. Even if it gets you nowhere, there is a certain dignity and professionalism in knowing your stuff. So please do so.
