Feast or famine in the Notary industry

For Notaries out there it is feast or famine.

Notary Cafe is a prime example of this. They publish stats on who is getting jobs and how many how recently. It is normally about 7% of the notaries give or take who are completely monopolizing the business while the others are going hungry. I guess people want to hire the good Notaries and forget the rest.

Our Facebook posts are the same. Certain posts get all the publicity while others get ignored.

On 123notary, the Notaries who are doing everything right get tons of business. But, how do we convince the newer Notaries how to get reviews, brush up their notes, and get certified? Few people listen, but those who do often prosper.

I just wonder what would happen if the industry picked up. Would companies have higher standards for Notaries and also pay more? Would the work be more equally spread out? Unfortunately, the way this business works, 1% of the notaries are experts, another 2% are not bad, 10% are somewhat reasonable, and the rest get a D or F. These are bad odds and create a type of pyramid where only the top of the pyramid gets lots of work and everybody else complains that they are not getting what they deserve. But, if you are a D or F, how much can you possibly deserve. Getting work at all is amazing if you don’t have solid industry related knowledge.

  1. Feast might be a problem for Notaries who are on a diet.

  2. The signing services are competing, too. More than once this past month I received assignments for the same address, time and place from two different services. One pays fairly; the other always low balls.

  3. I have found over the last 30 days or so that the signing companies call at 5 minutes to 7 for a signing at 7:30pm and it’s on the other side of the world. And, they want to pay $40.00. Don’t get me wrong, I am appreciative for work being offered but come on! They wonder why you decline these kinds of signings. However, on a positive note, I can get a call at 5pm on a holiday weekend for a signing within 2 hours and be able to ask for a higher price because I am the only one around that answered the email/texts. I love this business and I love 123 Notary. When it comes time to update my membership, I am going full throttle next time. Thanks again Jeremy for your Search Engine Optimization quality.

  4. NOT sorry!!! I do a great job, and I re-examine my fees when I believe that I didn’t get paid enough bc of: 1) distance; 2) time necessary to be thorough (like when they use us like we are the staff at Chicago Title!!!) I will tell people that if they want it done right, hire ME. I only recommend two other NSA’s and one is my DD. Companies are still lowballing every offer and I lose many bc they find somebody local who will accept a low fee. But, it has been feast of famine. January I had no signings, May, back to about 20, but I had to fight for a Refusal to Sign where I showed the CD to the signers, and amortorization was 10 pages from the end (160 page document). The signers cancelled right then, disagreed with # of months, and payments/month, and the company wanted to pay me a “travel fee.” I didn’t know this until they sent me a revised work order, the next day, AFTER I had completed the resign. I called (held the documents hostage, unbeknownst to them) and had to argue double the original agreed upon fee. I spent a total of 10 hours on this one signing, so NO APOLOGIES for my work ethic. BTW, I work with lawyers and I get their advice all of the time. Our accountant was a very sloppy notary. He passed away last year, so nobody will call him on it, but I don’t want to be ruined by stupid mistakes.

  5. STOP WORKING FOR PIMPS ( SIGNING SERVICES ) GET THIS ATTITUDE. THIS ‘SIGNING SERVICE ‘ IS NOT EVEN A LEGAL BUSINESS,AND COULD BE ANYONE WITH NO IDENTITY OF OWNERSHIP/ RESPONSIBILITY / ACCOUNTABILITY WHEN YOU GET CONNED AND GO UNPAID.
THIS IN MY OPINION SHOULD CEASE TO EXIST. THEY HAVE NO SKIN IN THE GAME. PIMPS ARE WHAT THEY ARE .
