From start to finish — how long does a signing take?

Filed under: General Articles — admin @ 4:26 am

We had a Notary on our blog commentaries that wrote that it takes her four hours from start to finish with a signing. There is the phone call, confirming the signing, driving, signing, driving, dropping the package, invoicing, more invoicing if they don’t pay you, etc. How long does it take the rest of you? Do you track your time?

For me I was able to do 11 signings on my best day in the business. It was back in 2002 I think. I’m not sure of the year. I started at 10am and ended at 3am. That was a long day. 15 hours to do 11 signings. So, if you drive from one job to the next, that averages slightly more than one drive per job. Some of the companies were not happy that I didn’t drop the packages until late at night and missed the deadline.

  1. I agree as to the amount of time for a single signing. In my case, I do a thorough review of the signing package as well as the instructions from the lender or title office. Then it is driving, presenting, final review, driving, scanback if required, dropping and getting a receipt, then returning to my office. The above is inclusive of several emails with the title office and submission of the invoice. Three to four hours when it is said and done. Careful professional service means time!

  2. The printing and scan backs are what take a lot of time. It took me quite a while to figure out a good system.

  3. Agree with Geoffrey. Someone here made a comment not too long ago that stating such preparation and execution is a lie. To this I would ask, “how often do you, as the NSA, miss details that cause documents to have to be resigned?” Have you ever discovered a detail At a signing and Not been able to reach the lender/vendor/title company to ask how to treat it? I download and print documents as soon as I find out they are available. I keep 7 plastic legal sized envelopes with a cardstock label. You never know when you will have multiple signings accepted quickly. I write on the side of each UPS or FedEx shipping label with: signers name, signing date, city, state and tape it to the shipping envelope when I prep, and I double bag documents. So, yeah, 2-3 hrs prep and about 1 hr for each physical signing. BC I sleep with with atty I Only give generic explanations for documents, although I do explain that there is always one document phishing for any mechanics liens. I also like to tell borrowers that the Best document in the package is the one that asks how you want your money sent!
